Troubleshoot a connection
Diagnose a failed VPN connection step by step: test internet access, isolate setup or app-specific failures, and collect the details support needs.

Start by finding out whether the underlying internet works without the VPN. Then narrow the problem to setup, the connection attempt or one particular app. Work through the relevant branch below and change one thing at a time.
First, record the symptom
Note the exact message and when it appeared. Did the app fail to open, reject sign-in, stay on “connecting,” or report connected while websites stopped loading? Those observations lead to different next steps.
If you need to disconnect for a comparison, remember that subsequent traffic may use your ordinary connection. Use a familiar, non-sensitive page for the test.
1. Does ordinary internet access work?
Disconnect the VPN and open two familiar websites. If neither loads, focus on the network first.
- Check the device is on the intended Wi-Fi, wired or mobile connection.
- On a public hotspot, finish its browser sign-in process.
- If another device is available on the same network, check whether it can browse too.
- On a network you manage, follow your device or router’s support guidance. On a hotel or workplace network, ask its operator instead of changing shared equipment.
Microsoft provides a separate Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide. You do not need to reset network settings as the first step in diagnosing a VPN problem.
2. Does the app complete setup?
If browsing works, open Zenshield and check the stage that failed. Sign-in happens in the app. Required onboarding includes the sharing explanation and explicit consent before participation starts.
If the problem is account access, follow accounts and sign-in. If the installer or operating system displays a warning, use download safety rather than switching off protection.
Disconnect another personal VPN before trying again. If it is an employer-managed VPN, ask IT before changing it. Reopen Zenshield once and retry the connection. Avoid repeated attempts without noting whether the error changes.
3. Does everything fail, or only one service?
| Observation | Next step |
|---|---|
| VPN never reaches its connected state | Record the error, app version and network type |
| VPN reports connected, but all tested sites fail | Disconnect, repeat the baseline test, then report the difference |
| Browsing works but one app fails | Check that app’s account state and error documentation |
| It works on one permitted network but not another | Record the network change and ask about the failing network’s rules |
| Connection breaks after sleep or moving networks | Note that trigger and retry after ordinary internet access returns |
A successful test elsewhere is a useful clue, not a complete diagnosis. If testing on mobile data, check your allowance and sharing preferences first.
4. Check service information
Visit service status. A specific incident may explain the behavior. If live information is unavailable, the page cannot establish whether the service is healthy or experiencing an outage.
5. Send the results, not just “it doesn’t work”
Use this outline in a support message:
- Device and operating-system version:
- Zenshield version, if shown:
- Network type and approximate time with time zone:
- Exact action and error:
- Does browsing work while disconnected?
- Does the problem affect every service or one app?
- Which single changes did you try, and what happened?
Do not include passwords, sign-in codes or private browsing history. The support-request guide shows a completed example and explains how to redact a screenshot.
