# A practical public Wi-Fi checklist

Join the right hotspot, finish captive-portal sign-in, understand HTTPS, and diagnose public Wi-Fi problems before blaming the VPN.

On public Wi-Fi, first establish that you have joined the right network and that it has granted internet access. Then decide whether a VPN fits the connection and the task. A VPN is one part of that decision, alongside the website you visit and the software on your device.

## Before joining the network

Ask the venue for the exact network name. If two similar names appear, do not guess which one is official. Check signs near the reception desk or ask staff, especially when a network name includes a brand you recognize.

Have an alternative for anything urgent. If the venue cannot explain its connection process, use a connection you control or wait. There is no need to troubleshoot an unfamiliar hotspot while trying to complete a time-sensitive task.

## Get past the sign-in page first

A public hotspot may require a browser page where you accept terms, enter a room number or choose an access option. This is often called a captive portal.

1. Join the venue’s confirmed network.
2. Open the operating system’s network sign-in notification, if one appears.
3. Follow the venue’s instructions in the browser.
4. Open a familiar HTTPS website to confirm that access works.
5. Only then open the VPN and attempt a connection.

If the portal does not appear, ask the venue for its current instructions. Do not enter account passwords into a page merely because it appeared after joining Wi-Fi. Stop at unexpected certificate or security warnings.

## Understand what HTTPS already does

The [FTC’s public Wi-Fi advice](https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/are-public-wi-fi-networks-safe-what-you-need-know) explains that widespread website encryption has made public Wi-Fi safer than older warnings suggest. HTTPS protects the connection to a website, but it does not establish that the website itself is honest. A fraudulent website can use HTTPS too.

For an important account, open your usual app or use a saved bookmark. Check the destination before signing in. Keep device updates and ordinary account protections in place whether or not the VPN is connected.

## Decide whether sharing fits this network

## If the connection stops working

If a change is needed, make one change and retest before making another. That gives you a useful account of what helped.

## Before you leave

Finish the session, stop any sharing you do not intend to continue, and check the active connection. If you do not want to reconnect to the venue automatically, use your device’s option to forget the network.
