Packet loss means traffic sent along a path does not arrive as expected. Applications respond differently: some retransmit missing information, while a live session may show interruptions. A symptom such as a frozen call can have several causes, so it is not proof of packet loss by itself.
A practical example
If a game reports two percent loss over one session, that figure belongs to that tool and its measurement window. It does not mean two percent of your files are permanently missing, nor does it identify the exact point in the network where the loss occurred.
What to check
Record the app’s reported figure, duration, server and connection type. Compare a short session when optional downloads are paused. If several apps fail on the same network, investigate that connection before blaming one application. If only one game reports loss, include its server region and status information in the report.
What it does not tell you
A successful browser page load does not rule out intermittent loss during a game. Equally, missing replies to a diagnostic probe can reflect how an endpoint treats that probe. Use application symptoms and repeated observations together.
