What is jitter?

Jitter is variation in packet timing or delay.

Jitter is variation in packet timing or delay. A connection can have a reasonable average delay while individual responses arrive unevenly. This variation can matter in live calls and games, where steady delivery may be more useful than one fast response.

A practical example

Consider an illustrative sequence of round-trip times: 30, 31, 95 and 29 milliseconds. The average hides the isolated long delay. This is a simple example of variation, not a formal jitter calculation or a measurement of Zenshield.

What to check

Use the game or calling application’s own connection information when available. Watch a short session and record when the interruption occurs. Compare the same server and network before changing another condition. If the app reports jitter, keep its unit and the measurement window in the report.

What it does not tell you

Do not infer jitter from download speed alone. A single ping cannot describe variation either. The application’s definition of the statistic matters when comparing reports from different tools. Read the tool’s method before treating two numbers as equivalent.

Read the technical reference for the underlying definition. For a connection that is failing now, use the troubleshooting guide. To choose an app, follow the VPN selection worksheet.
