What is a VPN and how does it work?

Understand the VPN route, which IP websites see, what HTTPS still does and how to choose a VPN for your device and everyday browsing.

A VPN, or virtual private network, creates an encrypted connection between your device and a VPN server. The server then connects to the websites and services you use. For traffic that goes through that route, the destination sees the VPN server’s public IP instead of your original connection’s IP.

Follow one webpage request

Without a VPN, your device reaches a website through your internet provider. With a VPN connected, covered traffic first travels through the VPN tunnel. The provider still supplies internet access, but the tunnel changes what it can observe about the traffic inside it.

The VPN server becomes another party in the connection. That is why the service’s operator, data practices and funding model matter alongside the app’s appearance. Review the provider’s own policies rather than assuming all VPNs handle data in the same way.

What changes, and what stays the same?

An HTTPS website already encrypts the connection between browser and website. A VPN does not turn an unsafe download into a safe one or fix a compromised account. Keep your device updated and use multifactor authentication where available.

When might a VPN be useful?

You might want an extra layer of privacy on shared Wi-Fi, a different public IP for browsing, or a route through another available location. Start with one clear reason. A distant route can add delay, so test your actual activity instead of assuming a VPN will make it faster.

For a café or hotel, complete the network’s sign-in page first. Then connect in the VPN app and check that your normal browsing still works. If you switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data, recheck the app’s status.
