A VPN and a proxy are different roles

Follow the path of a VPN and a proxy request, understand HTTPS, and distinguish your VPN connection from Zenshield’s bandwidth-sharing role.

Both a VPN and a proxy can put another network between you and a website. The important differences are which traffic they handle, how the connection is configured and whose traffic is being carried. In Zenshield, your VPN use and your contribution to Geonode’s proxy network are separate roles.

Follow one request from your device

Imagine opening a news website. Normally, your device sends its request through your internet connection to the website. With a VPN in the path, traffic covered by the VPN travels through its tunnel to a VPN server before continuing to the destination.

A proxy receives requests on a client’s behalf and forwards them onward. MDN’s proxy explanation describes this intermediary role. A proxy configured in one application may handle that application’s requests while other applications keep using their ordinary routes.

The word “proxy” does not, by itself, tell you whether the connection to it is encrypted. Likewise, the presence of a VPN app does not prove every connection on a device is included. Configuration matters in both cases.

Compare the roles, not just the names

These are general distinctions. They are not a list of features verified for Zenshield.

HTTPS is another part of the path

HTTPS protects communication between a browser and the website it connects to. It is separate from the link to a VPN or proxy. Mozilla explains that TLS provides encryption, integrity and authentication for that connection.

That distinction prevents a common misunderstanding: a normal VPN does not automatically reveal the contents of an HTTPS message to the VPN operator. Equally, connecting through a VPN does not make an unsafe destination trustworthy. Keep browser security checks enabled.

The two directions in Zenshield

When you use the VPN, you are the person sending traffic through a VPN service to reach the internet.

When you consent to idle bandwidth sharing, you also contribute your connection to Geonode’s proxy network. Other clients’ requests may use that connection as described in Zenshield’s sharing policy. This participation is the exchange that funds free VPN access.

One role concerns the route of your own traffic. The other concerns traffic your connection helps carry for the network. Reading them as separate questions makes the consent decision clearer:

  • Where does my own VPN traffic leave the network?
  • What use of my connection am I agreeing to support?
  • Which network am I using, and am I allowed to participate on it?
  • How do I stop participation when I no longer want it?

Why a proxy country is not a VPN server promise

Suppose a proxy network includes participating connections in country A. That alone does not show that a VPN app lets you select an exit in country A. These are different inventories and can change independently.

The same applies to an article about a country. Our locations directory helps readers find geographic context; it does not verify a server in every place listed. If you need a particular exit address, confirm the option in the VPN itself before relying on it.

Which information do you need next?

If your concern is third-party use of your home or mobile connection, focus on the sharing policy. An IP test of your own browser cannot tell you everything about that separate participation.
