VPNs and gaming: what to check

Distinguish lag from slow downloads, compare gaming sessions fairly, and use ping, jitter and packet-loss observations to choose the next step.

A VPN changes the route between your device and a game’s servers. Whether that improves your experience depends on the route and the network at the time. Test the game itself before concluding that a VPN has fixed lag.

Separate three different problems

A slow game download, a low frame rate and delayed online actions are not the same symptom. A VPN experiment is most relevant to the network path, so identify the problem before changing settings.

What you notice What to observe
Installation or updates take a long time Download progress and other traffic using the connection
The picture stutters, including during offline play Frame rate and device performance
Online actions arrive late or players jump around In-game latency, connection warnings and disconnections

For network problems, ping describes the round-trip delay; jitter describes how that delay varies; packet loss describes traffic that fails to arrive. EA’s connection-quality explanation describes these measures. A high download-speed number alone does not establish a stable gaming connection.

Make a fair comparison

Use a practice match or another low-stakes session so an experiment does not interrupt teammates. Check the game’s VPN rules before testing.

  1. Stay on the same device and network, and use the same game region or server where you can.
  2. Pause optional downloads or updates you control. Record anything you cannot keep constant.
  3. Play a short session without the VPN. Note the approximate ping range, any connection warnings and how the session felt.
  4. Connect the VPN, return to the same game setup and repeat the session.
  5. Repeat once more if the results differ. A single good or bad match can reflect changing conditions.

Write the observations down rather than trying to remember a number from the start of a match. An example note is: “Same server, 19:00 to 19:15, home Wi-Fi, two interruptions without the VPN and one with it.” That is an observation, not proof that the VPN caused the difference.

Read the result before changing more settings

If the connection improves consistently, try a normal session before depending on it. If latency rises or interruptions become more frequent, disconnect and keep the result as part of your troubleshooting.

If there is no meaningful difference, investigate the underlying network or the game’s service information. Do not reset a router, remove drivers and change VPN settings all at once. You would lose the ability to tell which change mattered.

Check the actual device you play on

Zenshield currently has Windows and Android apps. Its forthcoming console, router and other platform pages do not establish support for those devices. Installing an app on a laptop also does not by itself route a separate console through it.

Free Zenshield access involves consent to idle bandwidth sharing. Consider that exchange on the network you use for gaming, especially if someone else manages it. We do not publish a measured gaming-performance advantage or a guarantee of lower ping.

Send a report someone can investigate

Include the game, device, network type, selected region, approximate time and time zone. Describe what changed when you connected or disconnected the VPN. Share the exact error text, but leave out your account password and private messages.

Use connection troubleshooting if the VPN cannot connect at all, or prepare a support request if the problem persists.
