VPN vs incognito: what each one hides

Compare local browsing history with network privacy, then choose the controls that fit the information you want to protect.

Incognito changes what the browser keeps after a private session. A VPN changes the route your internet traffic takes. Neither makes a signed-in account anonymous.

Start with the person you want privacy from

If you share a computer and do not want a visit in its ordinary browser history, a private window addresses that local problem. If you want websites to receive a VPN exit address instead of the public address of your home connection, a VPN addresses that network problem.

Your aim Relevant control Important boundary
Avoid leaving an ordinary browsing-history entry Private browsing window Downloaded files and bookmarks can remain
Change the address a website sees VPN connection Accounts and information you submit still identify you
Stop a site reading precise location Browser location permission An IP can still suggest an approximate area
Reduce cross-site tracking Browser tracking controls One control cannot cover every identification method

Google explains that Incognito does not hide activity from websites or organisations that manage your network. Close every Incognito window to finish that private session.

Try a comparison you can understand

Open the IP tool in your ordinary browser and note the address. Open the same tool in a private window without changing the network or VPN state. The outward-facing address will often be the same. That is expected: the browser mode did not choose a new internet route.

Next, connect your VPN and repeat the ordinary-window check. Compare the same address family. A changed public address supports a route change for that browser request. It says nothing about whether a website still has your account cookie.

Use the controls together when needed

You can use a private window and a VPN at the same time. Decide what each is doing rather than treating two controls as twice the anonymity. For a sensitive account, opening its genuine website and protecting the sign-in remain more important than the colour of the browser window.

For location prompts, follow browser location permissions. For testing the connection itself, use the VPN check procedure.
