Email tracking can use remote images and tagged links to record interactions with a message. Changing your IP with a VPN does not remove a unique identifier embedded in the email.
Treat images and links separately
A remote image can produce a request when a message is displayed. A link can contain a unique recipient or campaign identifier that is sent when clicked. Preventing one request does not automatically remove the other.
Check your email app’s image-loading and privacy settings. Apple Mail offers Mail Privacy Protection to limit information senders can learn about message opens and IP addresses. Other clients use different controls, so follow the help for the app you actually read mail in.
Review links before sharing
Our tracking link cleaner removes common campaign parameters such as utm_source and fbclid on your device. It does not recognise every private recipient code, rewrite short links or guarantee that a URL is anonymous.
For a newsletter link, inspect the domain first. If it is a redirect service, removing familiar parameters from the visible URL may leave a unique token in its path. Visiting the organisation’s official website directly can be simpler than passing along a personalised email link.
What a VPN changes
A VPN can change the outward-facing IP used for a request routed through it. It does not hide the mailbox address the sender already knows or erase the unique code in a clicked link. Keep account security, link trust and network privacy separate.
If a message is suspicious, do not load its images or click its unsubscribe link merely to investigate tracking. Use your email client’s report and blocking controls, and navigate to the sender’s known website independently when a genuine account issue needs attention.
