A VPN can cost nothing to download and still come with conditions worth understanding. The useful comparison is how access is funded, what you contribute and what happens when you reach a limit or decide to leave.
Four offers that can look similar at first

These are ways to fund or introduce a service, not security ratings. A price label cannot tell you whether an app handles information responsibly.
A free tier is different from a trial
A trial has an end point. A free tier may continue while you stay within its rules. Before creating an account, find out which one you are signing up for.
For example, Proton describes its free service as supported by paid users, and its free download page lists no data limit. That does not mean every feature promoted for Proton’s paid plans is included in the free offer.
If a signup flow asks for payment details, read the charging terms before proceeding. Record the trial end date and how to cancel. A money-back offer also differs from free access: you may have to pay first and request a refund under the provider’s conditions.
What a monthly allowance means in practice
Treat a data allowance as a budget to measure against your own usage. Avoid choosing based on a claim such as “enough for a month,” because someone reading email and someone watching video have very different needs.
Here is an illustrative calculation, not a measurement of any VPN: if your intended tasks use 500 MB each day, 10 days would use roughly 5 GB before allowing for other traffic or how a provider counts usage. Background downloads and updates can matter too.
During a short trial, note the provider’s usage counter before and after a normal session. Then ask:
- Does the allowance cover the device or the whole account?
- What date does it reset?
- Does traffic stop, slow down or require an upgrade when it is used?
- Are the locations and features I need included in this tier?
Check the current answers with the provider. A quota alone is not a full plan description.
What Zenshield asks for instead
Zenshield supplies free VPN access through opt-in idle bandwidth sharing that supports Geonode’s proxy network. The app presents the exchange and asks for consent before participation starts. Sharing is required for free access; you can opt out at any time.
The practical decision is whether you are comfortable contributing your connection. Think about the network you will use, permission from its owner, and any mobile or roaming charges. “Idle” does not mean the transferred data is absent from your internet provider’s accounting.
Read the sharing policy and consent guide. Zenshield does not currently sell a subscription as an alternative to this exchange. Do not assume that withdrawing from sharing leaves the free VPN available.
Compare the cost that matters to you
For someone with a small mobile allowance, avoiding an app fee may be less important than controlling total data use. For someone who does not want connection sharing, a provider-funded free tier or direct payment may be a better fit. If you only need occasional access, a modest free allowance might be enough.
Write down the tradeoff you accept before comparing extras. For instance: “I can accept a monthly allowance, but I need it to work on my phone,” or “I am comfortable with sharing on my own home connection, but not on a work network.” Those statements give you a clear basis for choosing.
Before you commit
Find the provider’s official plan page, the relevant policy and its exit process. Check that the same conditions appear when you sign up. If the checkout or consent screen says something different from a review, resolve the difference first.
