VPN vs HTTPS: two different parts of the connection

Understand where HTTPS encryption ends, what a VPN adds, and why a VPN does not make an unsafe website trustworthy.

HTTPS protects the connection between your browser and the website you visit. A VPN adds a protected route between your device and the VPN service. You should still use HTTPS while connected to a VPN.

Follow a single request

Without a VPN, your browser sends an HTTPS request through your local network and internet provider toward the website. The HTTPS content remains encrypted in transit, although connection metadata can still be visible.

With a VPN, the browser’s request first travels inside the VPN connection. After reaching the VPN exit, it continues toward the website. HTTPS is what keeps that browser-to-website content protected beyond the VPN exit.

A simple example is a login form. The VPN route is not a replacement for the website’s HTTPS certificate. Do not submit a password after bypassing a certificate warning because the VPN app says connected.

Check the destination, not just the connection label

Read the hostname before entering account information. A lookalike domain can use HTTPS. Encryption protects transport to that domain; it does not establish that the domain belongs to the organisation you intended.

Keep your browser updated so it can apply current certificate and connection checks. If one site fails while others work, use single-website troubleshooting instead of disabling security checks.
