Start with the router and the devices that use it. A VPN on one laptop cannot repair an outdated router, replace a weak Wi-Fi password or update the other devices in your home.
Make a short router review
Use the manufacturer’s official app or local administration instructions. Record the current configuration before changing it. Check for firmware updates, a unique administrator password and WPA2 or WPA3 wireless encryption. Replace obsolete hardware that no longer receives security updates.
The administrator password and Wi-Fi joining password do different jobs. Changing one does not necessarily change the other. Keep both somewhere you can recover safely.
Separate visitors and household devices
A guest network can give visitors internet access without handing them the credentials for your main network. Review which devices are connected and investigate names you cannot identify. An unfamiliar label is a clue, not proof that a stranger joined: phones and smart devices can advertise unexpected names.
For each connected device, check software updates and available account protections. Disable remote administration if you do not need it and your router’s documentation recommends that configuration.
Where a VPN fits
A VPN can provide another route for supported device traffic and change the public IP visible to websites. It does not make every connected appliance protected simply because one computer is running the app.
Use a public-IP check on the device you connected, then test your normal tasks. Keep HTTPS enabled and continue updating the device.
