To change the public address websites see, connect through a VPN or another permitted internet connection, then check the result. Editing your device’s local Wi-Fi address usually does not change the outward-facing address of the network.
Pick the method that matches your goal
| Method | What can change | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Connect a VPN | Address seen by traffic using the VPN route | Verify the browser and other important apps separately |
| Switch from Wi-Fi to mobile data | Underlying internet connection | Mobile data charges and coverage apply |
| Ask your ISP about a new address | Provider-assigned public address | Availability depends on the service and contract |
| Renew a local network lease | Device address inside the network | Usually not the address a public website sees |
Restarting a router does not guarantee a new public address. An ISP may assign the same one again. Repeated restarts are a poor troubleshooting plan when you have no evidence that the public address is causing the problem.
Check the before and after
- Close work that should not be exposed during a deliberate network change.
- Run the IP checker and note the address privately.
- Connect the VPN or switch to the intended network.
- Repeat the same check in the same browser.
- Compare IPv4 with IPv4 or IPv6 with IPv6. Do not treat two address families as the same measurement.
If the address stays unchanged with the VPN connected, check whether the browser is excluded from the VPN or using another proxy. Follow checking whether a VPN works before repeatedly changing settings.
Know what an address change leaves behind
An account remains your account. Cookies, information you enter and browser permissions can reveal context independently of the IP. Changing an address will not erase a service’s records, remove a ban or fix a compromised password.
If the problem is a wrong city label, first check IP location mismatches. An approximate database location can be wrong even when the connection works correctly.

IP checker shows the wrong location ↗
A location label attached to an IP address is a database result. Note whether the site used an IP lookup, browser location permission or an account preference.
What a public IP address tells you ↗
Check your public IP before and after connecting, understand unchanged or unexpected results, and know what an IP lookup cannot establish.
A VPN and a proxy are different roles ↗
Follow the path of a VPN and a proxy request, understand HTTPS, and distinguish your VPN connection from Zenshield’s bandwidth-sharing role.
