A free VPN does not replace an internet plan. Here is what to check on the connection you use in Costa Rica.

Connection troubleshooting

Check the connection you have

On a hotel, workplace or shared Wi-Fi connection, finish any browser sign-in first, then connect in Zenshield. If you switch to mobile data, check the app’s connection status again.

You share

Bandwidth and your public IP for network requests.

Zenshield is free because you share part of your internet connection with Geonode’s network. Its customers’ requests travel through your public IP.

Sharing is required for free access. You agree in the app before it starts.

Sharing does not give network customers remote access to your device, files, photos or messages.

Usage varies, with no fixed bandwidth cap. Data charges, battery and performance effects may apply.

To stop sharing, fully exit the app. Uninstalling also stops it. Disconnecting the VPN or minimizing the app may leave sharing running. Sharing may restart when the app opens again.

  1. Download & install

Get the Windows app or Android APK. Downloading alone doesn’t start sharing.

  2. Read it. Then decide.

Create or sign in to your account in the app. Review the bandwidth exchange before you agree.

    Read the exchange

  3. Connect when you’re ready.

Turn on the VPN in the app. VPN and sharing run separately, so switching the VPN off may leave sharing on.

Questions about Zenshield

Contact the team

Is Zenshield free to use in Costa Rica?

Zenshield does not charge a subscription. Free access requires opt-in bandwidth sharing, and your internet provider’s data charges still apply. App access and network rules can vary, so check the connection you intend to use.

Does Zenshield have VPN servers in Costa Rica?

We have not confirmed which Zenshield server locations are available in Costa Rica. Check the app’s available locations before depending on a local IP address.

Can I use it on an iPhone or Mac?

The available downloads are Windows and Android. We are not offering an iOS, macOS or Linux download here.

What happens after I download?

Install the app, sign in or create an account, then read the sharing terms during onboarding. Consent is required before participation. Use the Windows instructions or Android instructions for help.

Will a VPN give me free mobile data?

No. A VPN uses an existing internet connection. Downloading, VPN use and opt-in bandwidth sharing can use your data allowance. Check your plan before participating on mobile data or roaming.

San José, Alajuela, Turrialba and other locations appear in IPinfo’s country directory. IP-based location can reflect where a provider routes traffic, rather than the town you are standing in.

Check the connection you have

On a hotel, workplace or shared Wi-Fi connection, finish any browser sign-in first, then connect in Zenshield. If you switch to mobile data, check the app’s connection status again.

An IP location is approximate

An address associated with San José does not establish your precise location. Likewise, a city in this list does not establish a Zenshield VPN server. Check your visible public IP.
