Free access requires bandwidth sharing. How it works

The VPN basics.
Without the monthly bill.
An encrypted connection.
Your connection to the VPN server is encrypted. One more layer for the traffic you send through it.
A different IP.
For traffic routed through the VPN, websites see its IP instead of yours. Accounts and cookies can still identify you.
One less monthly bill.
There’s no VPN subscription fee. You share bandwidth to fund your access. We’ll explain the trade before you choose.
The exchange
Free for you.
Funded by sharing.
A clear exchange, agreed in the app. Here’s what makes $0 possible.

You share
Part of your internet connection.
Geonode’s network customers send requests through your public IP. Sharing is required for free access.
Three things to know before you start
Your files stay yours.
Sharing does not give network customers remote access to your device, files, photos or messages.
Your data plan still applies.
Usage varies with demand and has no fixed cap. It can affect data use, battery and connection performance. Use an unmetered connection you have permission to share.
Know how to stop.
Fully exit or uninstall the app to stop sharing. Disconnecting the VPN alone may leave sharing running.
You agree in the app before sharing starts.

What a VPN changes
A VPN changes the IP websites see. Your browser and device can still leave clues.
Without a VPN
Websites see your network’s IP.
Your device connects directly to the website.
With a VPN
Websites see the VPN’s IP.
For traffic routed through the VPN.
Browser, language and device details can still be visible with a VPN. Accounts and cookies can also identify you.

Download. Install. Connect.

Choose your device.
Get the Windows app or Android APK. Downloading alone doesn’t start sharing.
Read the exchange.
Free access requires bandwidth sharing. Review the terms and decide in the app before sharing starts.
Connect when you’re ready.
Turn on the VPN in the app. VPN and sharing run separately, so switching the VPN off may leave sharing on.

Questions
Free VPN. What’s the catch?
The trade is bandwidth sharing. You agree to let network customers send requests through your connection and public IP. That funds your VPN access. There’s no VPN subscription fee, but your provider’s data charges still apply.
How much bandwidth does sharing use?
The amount varies with network demand and your device. There’s no fixed cap. Technical controls are designed to reduce disruption, but sharing can affect data use, battery and connection performance. Your internet provider’s charges still apply.
How do I stop sharing?
Fully exit or uninstall the app, or use a stop-sharing setting if your version supports one. Just switching the VPN off or minimizing the app may leave sharing running.
Can network customers see my personal files?
Bandwidth sharing does not give network customers remote access to your files, photos or messages. It routes their internet requests through your connection and public IP.
Does a VPN make me anonymous?
No. It encrypts the connection to its server and changes the IP websites see for routed traffic. Your accounts, cookies and other signals can still identify you.
Which devices can I use?
Windows and Android are available. Android is a direct APK download. Setup and the sharing decision happen in the app.
