TunnelBear’s published free plan includes 2 GB of data per month. Zenshield offers free VPN access through opt-in idle bandwidth sharing that supports the bandwidth-sharing service.
That makes the first question fairly simple: would you rather work within a published free allowance, or participate in bandwidth sharing? Neither answer tells you which product will work best on your particular network.

When the allowance matters
If you only need a VPN occasionally, a small data allowance may cover your task. If you use it regularly, check how your provider counts data and what happens after the allowance is used. TunnelBear’s free-account guidance is a better source for current account restrictions than an old review.
When sharing matters
With Zenshield, read the exchange before installing. You consent inside the app before sharing starts, and participation is required for free access. You can opt out at any time. Shared traffic can use your internet connection, so your own data plan also matters.

Turn the allowance into a practical trial
Use a task that resembles your intended use, then look at the account’s data counter. If you only want occasional access, test one of those occasional sessions rather than a large download you would not normally do.
As an illustrative calculation, four sessions using 200 MB each would use about 800 MB. That is an estimate of the example, not a TunnelBear usage measurement. Your real sessions, background traffic and the provider’s accounting determine how much of the allowance is consumed.
If you expect the free allowance to be insufficient, compare the current paid conditions before upgrading. A monthly price advertised for a longer purchase period is not necessarily the amount charged today. Read the payment total and renewal terms in the actual offer.
Check the plan, not just the feature page
Keep the free and paid columns separate when reviewing locations, controls and device rules. An item shown under Unlimited does not establish that it is included in Free. If a specific capability is essential, look for an explicit statement for the tier you intend to use.
With Zenshield, the first decision remains consent to idle bandwidth sharing. On a borrowed or managed connection, establish permission as well as your personal preference. A free app is only a good fit if you can use it under conditions you accept.
