If Minecraft cannot join a server, start with the server details and the error message. Reinstalling the game or changing network settings immediately makes it harder to identify the original fault. Keep your saved worlds backed up before any reinstall.
Confirm which game and server you are using
Write down your Minecraft edition, game version, device and the server address supplied by its owner. Minecraft's official server guide has separate instructions for Java and Bedrock. Follow the instructions for your edition rather than copying a friend's settings without checking.
For a Java server, the official guide describes using Multiplayer and either Direct Connection or Add Server. For Bedrock, begin from Play and the server options available on your platform. Ask the server owner whether your exact edition and version are supported. If the server needs an invitation or permission to join, resolve that first.
Let the error narrow the problem

A screenshot of the full error is more useful than a report that says only “Minecraft is broken.” Remove private chat or personal details before sharing it.
Test the connection one change at a time
Restart the game and retry the same server. If a VPN is already running, compare with it disconnected on a network you trust, where permitted. Then, if practical, repeat on another connection. Avoid downloading unofficial fixes or turning off your firewall entirely to make a server join.
Keep a small record: time, server, connection used, VPN state and result. If one connection works and another fails, give that evidence to the network or server administrator. It does not automatically mean the failed network needs a VPN.
