A VPN protocol defines how the VPN connection is established and carries traffic. When an app offers a protocol choice, start with its recommended setting. Change it to answer a specific problem, such as repeated disconnects on one network.
Compare the parts that matter
WireGuard is designed around a relatively small protocol and implementation. IPsec is a suite for protecting IP traffic; IKEv2 is commonly used to negotiate IPsec connections. OpenVPN is another widely deployed VPN system. These names do not establish how well a particular provider has configured or supported its service.

Run a controlled comparison
Choose one ordinary task, such as a video call or a file download. Keep the device, network and destination unchanged. Record the first protocol, the symptom and the time. Change only the protocol, reconnect and repeat the task.
Use the speed tool as one observation, not a league table. It tests the route to this website. A faster result here does not prove that a game or streaming service will improve.
If changing protocol fixes a problem on hotel Wi-Fi but not at home, keep that distinction in your support report. “Protocol A fails on this network” is more actionable than “Protocol B is always better.”
