What is IPsec VPN?

Understand IPsec’s role in protecting IP traffic, how IKEv2 fits, and what to check before using an IPsec configuration.

IPsec is a suite of protocols and policies for protecting traffic at the IP layer. A VPN can use IPsec to authenticate and protect traffic between its endpoints.

How IKEv2 fits

IKEv2 is a key-management protocol commonly used to establish security associations for IPsec. It handles negotiation rather than being a synonym for every part of the traffic-protection system.

A settings screen may label a connection IKEv2, IPsec or a combined name. Use the configuration instructions for the service providing that connection. Similar names do not make unrelated server addresses, credentials and certificates interchangeable.

Consumer and workplace connections

An organisation can configure IPsec for access to its own network. A consumer VPN may use it to carry traffic through the provider’s internet exit. The protocol name alone does not tell you which resources become accessible.

For a workplace connection, obtain the configuration through your administrator’s approved channel. Do not import an unknown profile because it uses a familiar protocol name.

Troubleshoot the arrangement you have

Note the operating system, app, network and exact error. A negotiation failure is different from a connected tunnel that cannot reach an internal site. Keep those observations separate when requesting help.

VPN protocol selection explains how to compare supported choices. This definition is not a claim that Zenshield offers an IPsec configuration or accepts third-party profiles. Follow the options documented for the current app.
